Professional dental care makes it possible to cope with tasks that are unsolvable at home. Even when there are no noticeable deposits of dental calculus, persistent plaque and pigmentation impossible to remove with a toothbrush and dental floss may develop on enamel and cervical line. Sometimes such build-ups are hard to notice on your own, but they are known to harm the enamel and periodontium.

What is air flow?

Professional air flow cleaning was developed in Sweden as a safe and quick way to remove plaque, stains on teeth, pathogenic bacteria in the gingival line. As a result of the procedure, the enamel becomes lighter by 1-2 tones, because its natural colour is regained. Yet, this is not a whitening method.

Air flow is recommended:

• - as a regular hygiene procedure once every 6 months,
• - when preparing teeth for the installation of braces,
• - for regular care of braces and teeth,
• - in preparation to dental prosthetics,
• - for the care of dentures and implants,
• - as a prevention of periodontal disease, periodontitis, gingivitis,
• - prior to surgery in the oral cavity.

Such mild procedure is suitable for patients with sensitive teeth. It is contraindicated in cases of bronchial asthma.

While the device is operational, particles fly off the tooth surface with force, so they are caught with a special suction device. But part of the abrasive still gets outside, so the patient has to wear protection (hat, glasses, wipes). Also, a saliva ejector is used in the process of cleaning. Yet, even in case a patient swallows some liquid with an abrasive, it will not do any harm.

Air flow teeth cleaning takes no more than 30 minutes. During this time, the doctor manages to treat each tooth from all sides, including interdental spaces.

In Kyiv, the price of complex air flow care procedure can be standard, regardless of the amount of work. But sometimes patients would like to remove or add something to the procedures. Some stages are not required based on indications, and the physician will tell this in advance. For example, it is possible to avoid fluoride treatment after teeth cleaning, and the price of air flow will be lower. Be sure to ask your dentist all questions at the appointment.

Recommendations after professional cleaning

Immediately after cleaning, even the smallest abrasive particles can cause discomfort on the gums, there may be minor bleeding. This is more likely in cases of accumulation of large amounts of plaque along the cervical line. Such a reaction is not dangerous and will resolve in two to three hours.

For the first two hours after the procedure, patients are allowed only to drink water, it is recommended to avoid eating. This will reduce the likelihood of pigmentation of the enamel, and the gums will be able to recover faster after irritation with an abrasive.

In the first three hours it is recommended to avoid smoking, but it is better to take a break for several days.

After air flow cleaning, it is recommended to change the toothbrush.

After intensive cleaning, enamel may intensely absorb pigments from food, beverages, cigarette smoke. Therefore, for daily care it would be advisable to choose a toothpaste that will protect the enamel from such effects. Immediately after the procedure, ask your dentist which toothpaste is best for you to maintain the result for as long as possible.
